New Perspectives on Teaching Boys and Girls”.

Brief Description of Course Requirements Your Gendered Path

In general, describe your life experiences that brought you to this class. Specifically respond to each prompt below. Likely length: 2 – 3 pages.

  • How has gender been a part of your career and life?
  • What kind of path has evolved?
  • Where do you want this path to lead?
  • Where do you teach now, what is your position, and do you teach in single-gender or coed?
Data Review

Gather two forms of data from your classroom, school, district or country by gender (and other categories if possible, but not necessary). Data could include student academic performance, student participation, classroom habits, discipline, etc. Post all data as percentages. Likely length: 2 – 4 pages.

  • Post the data by subgroups.
  • Discuss the implication of the data for teacher teaching, student learning, and school programs. Be sure to identify and discuss surprises, highlights, common trends.
  • Comment on how your data connects with data from the Center on Educational Policy.
Additional Resource Briefing

Search for and Read two journal articles on gender differences or one chapter from an additional book on gender differences. Likely length: 4 pages.

There are two (2) sections to the paper.

  • Section A) How the information in the new text fits or does not fit with what we have learned so far. You will need to make the connection. Essentially, you are trying to bring gender into the conversation about the other texts; trying to explain how gender might fit within other conversations on education. This should be at least a page long.
  • Section B) Reference and explain 2 ideas per article or 4 ideas from the chapter of the text/book that are similar or different from the readings we have completed so far (Dr. James’ books or the journal articles or data.) You will need to provide the citation from the articles/texts that you reference from our readings. It would be good to have this be a separate section so that it is clear. This section will be longer. I would suspect this to be about 3 pages.

It is recommended to read and respond to each other’s postings. This is not required though.

Connecting “Best Practice” and Gender

Gender is just one more way to understand students. With all new information, teachers need to blend the new with the old. Select a “Best Practice” you use or is used at your school or you are familiar with and explain how gendered ideas can influence, inform, or modify this best practice from the point of view of boys and girls. Best Practice may include but is not limited to: Differentiated Instruction, Readers and Writers Workshop, Discussion Based Teaching, Project-Based Learning, Problem-Based Learning, Inquiry Learning, International Baccalaureate, Montessori, Understanding By Design, Multiple Intelligence
Theory, Learning Styles, and content specific practices.

ADDITIONAL RESEARCH IS NOT NECESSARY. YOU SHOULD ALREADY HAVE KNOWLEDGE OFTHE BEST PRACTICE. Likely length: 2 pages.

  • Section A: Briefly describe the Best Practice.
  • Section B: Analyze and suggest how gendered information could affect the use of the Best Practice.
  • Section C: Provide three questions for educators to consider when exploring this Best Practice and Gender.

It is recommended to read and respond to each other’s postings. This is not required though.

Connecting to the Text

Due each during each week of readings (TMB, TFB, and articles) Reflect on your students with an eye to the material discussed in the readings.

  • In what ways are your students similar to and different from the material in the text?
  • Provide a thorough discussion.
  • Also provide 2 quotes from the texts that are particularly important to you, your teaching, and your students.
  • Connect these quotes to your discussion about your observation.
  • Post your response.

You will do this response with each set of readings due during classes 1 – 8.

Responses to Connecting to the Text

Respond to at least three (3) Connecting to the Text Original Posting.

  • Responses can include suggestions, questions, or comments.
  • Try to connect the original posting to something in your classroom, experience, or readings.
  • Extend the conversation.
Plan for Responding to Gender at Your School

How do you recommend discovering gendered issues or needs at your school, what would be your recommendation for addressing these, and how would you suggest you monitor changes or impact? Likely length: 2 pages.

  • Provide a narrative of actions or steps for exploring gender more thoroughly at your school in order to better meet the needs of students. Consider the issues and obstacles, people that would need to be involved, and resources you may need.

NOTE: Your recommendation can be coed or single-gender or a mix.

Use Chadwell A Gendered Choice chapters 4 – 12 as a resource or ideas as needed.
